What's the best spectrum and light intensity for microgreens?

2022-05-27

Microgreens refer to the seedlings of vegetables or flowers and are considered one of the five most valuable cash crops in the world. Its growth cycle is fast, and it can be cultivated without soil. Therefore, it is very suitable for large-scale indoor planting in families or cities to achieve self-supply of food in cities.

This plant is sensitive to the light environment, in fact, low light, plant growth and nutrient content will be inhibited, but excessive light intensity will photosystem, electron transport and ATP synthase complex and Calvin-Benson Circulating enzymes have adverse effects, so plant needs need to be clarified. In addition to this, lighting quality is also a factor. Therefore, successful planting requires an understanding of the light preferences of these plants.

The following experiment brings us great inspiration. The scientists selected China Rose Radish (Raphanus sativus L.), Green Mizuna (Brassica rapa L. CV Nipposinica), Chicory (Cichorium intybus L.), and Alfalfa (Medicago) sativa L.), French Marigold (Tagetes tenuifolia CAV.) and Celosia (Celosia plumosa argentea L.), these typical microgreens were used for experiments.

Each plant was exposed to two different light spectra and three light intensities. The two different spectrums are red-blue and red-blue-green. The three light intensities were PPFD 110/220 and 340. The results showed that the light quality and light intensity combinations required for optimal performance of different species were different. As shown in the picture below: The best performance of China Rose Radish is at PPFD 110 + red blue light; while Green Mizuna is PPFD 340 + red blue green light.

As food crops, people usually like to diversify their cultivation to meet the needs of diverse tastes. But most fixed-spectrum Grow Lights on the market mean that we may need to buy a lot of different kinds of lights. Buying only one type of lamp means you won't get the best harvest when trying to switch varieties.

To this end, Feton Ultra Plant™ has launched a new light intensity spectrum adjustable function, a lamp with unlimited spectral light intensity combination. What is even more powerful is that it adopts a single model 150W modular design. When you need a larger planting area, you can quickly splicing multiple models, flexibly upgrade the light map, and take combined control.
